POMONA — Humboldt State's effort went unrewarded again in a 2-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer loss to Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday.

Coming out strong, the Jacks forced the action into the Broncos' end of the field, but were unable to find the net. Cal Poly Pomona countered effectively, scoring the first goal when Rego Cardenas' shot deflected off an HSU defender past keeper David Bussen just over 10 minutes in.

"Emotionally, we were off to a good start today," HSU head coach Andy Cumbo said.  "We were prepared, mentally and technically, but we turned the ball over too much."

The Broncos added the second goal later in the first half when Hector Quevedo took a ball from Brett Egertson, dribbling down the left side and pushing it in.

"Their second goal came on what should have been a routine clearance," Cumbo said. "But our players miscommunicated on whowas going to handle it, and they tucked it away."

Humboldt State aggressively attacked throuughout the second half, taking seven shots to four by the Broncos. Roland Demombynes finally put the Jacks on the scoreboard when he blasted home a score after taking the pass from Keith Lovell at the 60:04 mark.

With two minutes remaining, the Jacks appeared to tie the game when Mark Nelson played the ball to Trel Mangarin, who flicked it over the keeper and into the net. But an offsides call negated the score, sending HSU to its second road loss of the week.

With the victory, Cal Poly Pomona improves to 4-5-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the CCAA while the Lumberjacks are now 5-8 and 1-6. Humboldt State comes home this week to host UC San Diego on Friday and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday in CCAA action.
