POMONA — Falling for the fifth straight time, Humboldt State women's soccer came up on the short end of a 1-0 decision against Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday.
Bronco freshman Justine Barclay broke away midway through the second half and scored on a volley from teammate Bethany Meichsner, spoiling another extraordinary performance by HSU freshman goalkeeper Michaela Hernandez. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Broncos, who are now 7-4 overall and 4-4 in the CCAA while the Jacks fell to 3-8-2 and 1-6.
"We lacked presence and determination today," HSU head coach Andy Cumbo said. "The bright spot was Michaela in goal. She was very strong again, and has gained a lot of momentum and confidence lately."
Hernandez's effort was needed against a determined Cal Poly Pomona side, which dominated much of the possession, particularly in the second half. Near the end of the first half, Hernandez came up with an impressive save, tipping a high ball off the crossbar and catching the rebound to keep the game scoreless at the break.
Humboldt State returns home for two games this weekend, taking on UC San Diego on Friday and facing Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday.
