Womens soccer earns 2-0 win against Simpson

REDDING — (Sept. 7) Erin Ashdown and Meghan Connolly each tallied a goal as Humboldt State's women's soccer team claimed a 2-0 win over non-conference opponent Simpson University Friday in Redding.

The Lumberjacks improve to 2-2-2 with their second shutout of the season.

“We generated a lot of offense and opportunities, but we struggled to close the deal,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “Overall we dominated possession, we just didn't execute in front of the net.”

Ashdown scored her goal midway through the first half when she collected a sent up the field from Allison Lawrence and buried it into the net.

In the second half, Connolly gave the Jacks an insurance goal on an unassisted score.

“(Simpson's) goalkeeper had a fantastic game and had some quality saves,” said Cumbo. “Their whole team played with heart and determination.”

The match against Simpson was the Lumberjacks' final tune-up before opening California Collegiate Athletic Association play Sunday against Cal State L.A. That contest is set to kick-off 3 p.m. in Los Angeles.
