SAN FRANCISCO — Poor shooting and unrewarded opportunities by Humboldt State led to San Francisco State's 68-55 win over the Lumberjacks in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action Friday.
Despite a tough defensive effort, the Lumberjacks dropped to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in league games. With the win, San Francisco State improved to 5-7 and 2-3 in the CCAA.
Leading the way for the Gators were Krystle Mays and Dominique Hunter with 12 points each, while Jessica Hout-Freeman and Brio Rode both added 11.
Jennifer Enos,
Katie Franci and
Paige Peterson all scored 11 points to pace HSU, but a 26 percent shooting mark from the field hurt the Jacks' offense.
"We need to stay calm on offense and make those good looks that we were getting inside," HSU head coach
Joddie Gleason said. "We weren't able to handle a little contact.  They out-played us, and were  tougher than us. They deserved to win."
San Francisco State came out firing while the Lumberjacks struggled, and only three minutes into the game the Gators had already fashioned a 10-0 lead. Enos finally hit a three-pointer to put the Jacks on the board, but Mays drove for a basket and Hout-Freeman drained a three-pointer following an HSU turnover to make it 15-3 in favor of the Gators.
Humboldt State finally found momentum for a brief stint, scoring three straight times down the floor following three defensive stops. Franci drove for a layup to end the run before Rode sank an NBA-range three to shift the Gators into gear.
Another Rode trey reestablished the lead at 10 points before three-pointers by Enos and
Trisha Alaba, and a pair of Alaba free throws cut it down to four. The Gators eventually headed to the halftime lockerroom with a 29-24 advantage.
The second half started much like the first, HSU struggling to find points and rebounds. San Francisco State took advantage, moving up by 13 points again, mostly on transition points.
HSU rallied once more, pulling within  six points on Alaba's free throw before San Francisco State took control with a pair of three-pointers, finally gaining a 15-point lead on Morgan Aycox's layup.
The Lumberjacks will try to gain a win Saturday when they travel to face Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside.
