SEASIDE - Free throws and timely shooting down the stretch helped Humboldt State preserve a 72-59 win over Cal Sate Monterey Bay in a California Collegiate Athletc Association women's basketball game Saturday.
Jennifer Enos paced the Jacks offensively, hitting four of five shots from three-point range on her way to 16 points.
Kayla Henry added 10 points and
Brittney Taylor nine, while Luiza Osbrone provided valuable minutes and strong defense off the bench.
"Its great to win any games on the road," HSU head coach
Joddie Gleason said. "I appreaciate my team's ability to focus and bounce back."
The victory improves Humboldt State to 7-6 overall and evens the Jacks' CCAA record at 3-3. Cal State Monterey Bay, led by Dana Andrews' 18 points and 15 from Alma Lopez, fell to 3-10 and 2-4 in league.
Turnovers marred the opening minutes of the game, including four consecutive possesions that produced traveling calls. Those difficulties resulted in fewer shot opportunities, keeping the score low
The Jacks grabbed the lead for the first time when
Biava Arganda's turnaround jumper moved them ahead at the 10:30 mark of the first half. Humboldt State expanded the lead to eight points on two occasions, then moved up by nine on Alaba's free throws before Sabrina Jenkins' jumper pulled CSUMB within 34-27 at the half.
Cal State Monterey Bay scored the first four points of the second half, but the Jacks answered with a three-pointer from Luiza Osbourne and a jumper by Arganda. Arganda's scoop shot layup kept the momentum on the Jacks' side, moving them up 42-33.
HSU's lead grew to as many as 14 points before the Otters responded with back-to-back buckets by Tsuchiyama and Jenkins. Lopez hit a free throw and a jumper to continue the surge, cutting the Jacks lead to 58-51.
Humboldt State returns home for two more CCAA contests this week, taking on Chico State on Friday and facing Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday.
