SAN BERNARDINO — Vanessa Wilt contributed her 16th double-double of the season, scoring 18 points and grabbing 20 rebounds in a 63-53 win over Humboldt State in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball game Saturday.
Humboldt State dropped to 9-8 overall and 5-5 in league, coming home from the weekend roadtrip with a split. Cal State San Bernardino remained on top of the CCAA standings with a 8-2 mark, improving to 13-3 overall.
The Lumberjacks had three players in double figures, led by by
Katie Franci's 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Kayla Henry also scored 13 points, and
Taylor Kilgore contributed 10 for HSU.
"Cal State San Bernadino forces you to execute, and they force you to run your stuff," Gleason said. "They do a great job defensively of taking the game away from you. I have to give them a lot of credit for the way they approach the game."
Supporting WIlt's efforts for the Coyotes were Shanae Blake, who finished with 17 points, and Krystal Urzua, who added 11.
HSU forged a 9-2 lead in the game's first two minutes, the Jacks hitting four of their first five shots from the field. Cal State San Bernardino head coach Kevin Becker saw enough, and after a timeout, his team responded, scoring the next four points.
Neither team could generate much offense over the next five minutes, but the Coyotes found their form again before the Jacks. Getting CSUSB going was an HSU turnover that Urzua converted into a layin and free throw to pull her team within two at 11-9.
Cal State San Bernardino sustained the momentum, grabbing a 15-13 lead on Ford's three-pointer. Urzua's putback increased the margin, and this time it was HSU head coach
Joddie Gleason's turn to call her team to the bench to regroup.
Two mintues later, Henry slid along the baseline before dishing the ball to Franci, whose left-hander off the glass tied the score at 21-21. That's where it stayed until the halftime buzzer, both squads missing chances to take the lead.
CSU San Bernardino came out from the lockerroom intent on pounding the ball inside to Wilt, and she responded with six straight points. The Coyotes pulled ahead by six points when Rachel Johnson knocked down a jumper,
Keeping the pressure on, the Coyotes expanded the margin to nine on Johnson's three-pointer. Humboldt State pulled within three points on one occasion and four on another, but couldn't sustain the effort.
"We didn't force them to take tough shots in the second half," Gleason said. "Their posts got free, and they make those shots."
HSU is returns to Arcata to host a pair of CCAA games this week, hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday and Cal State Los Angeles on Saturday.
