Jacks roll to second straight CCAA win

ARCATA — Securing an early lead, Humboldt State defeated UC San Diego, 70-52, for the Lumberjacks' second straight California Collegiate Athletic Association win Saturday night.

Jennifer Enos' three-pointer opened the scoring, starting the Jacks on the right foot.  Enos contributed eight points, while defensively Kayla Henry and Brittney Taylor both tallied five rebounds to help the Jacks end the first half with a 12 point lead.

Also key to the win was the play of senior Jessica Haayer, who contributed tight defense and three assists on the evening.

"Jessica Haayer does not get enough credit," said HSU head basketball coach Joddie Gleason. "She goes into every game with the mentality and focus that keeps this team in the game. She did a great job stopping UC San Diego's Michelle Osier tonight."

The Jacks outscored the Tritons, 37- 31 in the second half, with five successful three-pointers by Enos and Alaba. UCSD closed within nine points in the first two minutes before the Lumberjacks went on a 7-0 run. HSU went on a second run, 10-0, to seal the win over the Tritions with 8:14 left.

Finishing the night with double digits were, Enos, Alba and Taylor with 18, 16 and 11 points, respectively. The Lumberjacks finished the night shooting 48 percent from the field, 45 percent from three-point range, also out-rebounding, UCSD 37-24.

The Jacks improved their record to a 5-5 overall and  2-2 in the league. Seeing only their second loss in the league, UCSD falls to a 2-2 league record and 10-3 overall. HSU hits the road again to take on San Francisco State, Friday at 5:30 p.m., and CSU Monterey Bay, Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
