ARCATA — From rebounding to defense, Humboldt State dominated every aspect of the game on the way to a 90-38 non-conference women's basketball victory over Academy of Art University on
Saturday.
While shooting 45 percent from the field themselves, the Lumberjacks' swarming defense held the Urban Knights to a paltry 14 percent. The Jacks improved to 6-3 overall while Academy of Art dropped to 1-10.
"We did a nice job distributing the ball on offense," HSU head coach
Joddie Gleason said. "We also did well on defense, making them take tough shots and forcing turnovers."
Five Jacks scored in double figures, led by
Taylor Kilgore's 13 points.
Katie Franci added 12 while
Bree Halsey and
Kayla Williams had 11 each.
Kristina O'Keefe chipped in 10 points while Halsey also topped the team with 11 rebounds.
Paige Peterson led the squad with six assists.
"Our playmakers did a nice job of penetrating the gaps and finding the shots," Gleason said. "We've been settling for the first shot instead of finding a good one, but we improved on that
today."
Sondra Stilwell scored 11 points to pace AAU, and Arika Navy added seven points off the bench. Levalasi Key led the Urban Knights with six rebounds.
HSU raced out to a 13-0 lead at the game's onset and didn't let up on the way to a 41-15 halftime score. Gleason substituted freely throughout the game, and every player grabbed at least one rebound in contributing to a 62-30 advantage on the boards.
The Lumberjacks take a break over the holidays before resuming CCAA competition by hosting San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay
Jan. 2 and 3, respectively. Both games begin at 5:30 p.m. to kick off a double-header.
