CAL POLY HUMBOLDT ATHLETICS

Jacks pull out clutch win, snap Otters' streak

ARCATA — Devin Peal scored 29 points and received strong support from the Humboldt State bench to lead the Lumberjacks past Cal State Monterey Bay, 92-84 and snap the Otters' winning streak at six.

WIth the win HSU improved to 15-7 overall and 10-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State Monterey Bay dropped to 8-13 and 7-8 in league games.

Missing big man Cy Vandermeer, HSU turned to Jameson Figgatt and Nick Green off the bench, and the pair responded with career highs of 16 and 10 points, respectively. Will Sheufelt scored 17 points for the Jacks, hitting 4-of-5 from three-point range, and Grayson Moyer added 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Cal State Monterey Bay, playing without forward Joe Mitchell, couldn't come up with an answer for the Lumberjacks' inside game despite the 6-9 Vandermeer sitting out with an injured knee. But the Otters came up with an answer offensively, gunning away from three-point range, where they finished 15-of-39 for the night.

Pacing the Otters were D'Shon Cannon and Juston Willis, with 17 points each, while Augie Johnston added 16 points. Jose Sanchez and Steve Monreal added 14 and 11, respectively.

The game was close throughout, except for a stretch in the second half when HSU appeared to take command. The Lumberjacks stretched their lead to 14 points when Devin Peal made a free throw to give HSU a 68-54 lead with 10 minutes, 55 seconds remaining.

Cal State Monterey Bay began its rally with seven minutes remaining, pulling within three points on Johnston's three-pointer. HSU held the Otters off for awhile, but a layup by Cannon trimmed the advantage to a single digit with 3:45 left to play.

HSU stretched its advantage to 81-77 from the free throw line, before Figgatt scored a layup. Peal's resounding dunk a minute later effectively ended the Otters' comeback hopes.

Humboldt State is back on the court Saturday, hosting San Francisco State at 7:30 p.m. in the East Gym.
