Jacks move on in championship bracket

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Riding the strong arm of Lizzy Prescott, Humboldt State softball claimed two more wins at the Schutt's Tournament on Friday,  defeating Fort Hays State, 3-1 to complete pool play, and knocking off CSU Monterey Bay, 6-2 in the first round of the championship bracket.

The victory sent the Lumberjacks into the championship semifinals, where they'll play Barry University at 9 a.m. Saturday. If they win that game, they'll move to the 2:30 p.m. title game.

In their final pool game, Lizzy Prescott pitched the complete game, giving up one earned run on three hits while walking one and striking out seven. She added another complete game in the late contest vs. CSUMB, striking out 14 while surrendering four hits.

The Jacks jumped ahead in the day's first game with a run in the first inning. Natalie Galettly walked, and two outs later Geneva Perrine advanced her to second with a single. A pair of walks drove in the first run.

HSU scored two more runs in the fifth, the first on back-to-back doubles by Kristen Klug and Chrissy Motzny. Galletly drove in the final run with a single.

In HSU's win over Cal State Monterey Bay, Prescott received all the support she needed from Galletly, Ashley Oltjenbruns and Kirsten Nouzouvsky, all of whom belted home runs.

Humboldt State enters Saturday's tournament game with a 10-2 record overall.
