HSU makes it three straight with win over Gators

ARCATA — San Francisco State's desperate run in the final two minutes came up short Friday, allowing Humboldt State to claim a 72-61 California Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball victory.

With their third straight win the Lumberjacks improved to 13-10 overall and 9-7 in the CCAA. San Francisco State dropped to 11-12 overall and 8-8 in the CCAA.

Leading Humboldt State offensively was Katie Franci, who scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Jennifer Enos added 12 points, and Kayla Henry and Paige Peterson both chipped in 10 points.

San Francisco State was paced by Krystle Mays and Brio Rode, with 18 points each, while Dominique Hunter contributed 16 points.

For the first 10 minutes the game remained tight, San Francisco State maintaining a slim lead. Brittney Taylor put Humboldt State ahead for the first time at 15-14 when she stole a pass and coasted all the way to the other end for the layup.

San Francisco State regained the lead before the Jacks exploded on a 12-1 run that began with two straight three-pointers by Taylor Kilgore. The largest advantage of the opening half came after Trisha Alaba's three-pointer, which made it 35-21, and the Jacks held on for a 35-23 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Gators managed to pull within six points when two free throws by Desiree Butler cut HSU's lead to 45-39. But Enos answered with a three-pointer to squelch San Francisco State's attempted rally.

Humboldt State led by as many as 15 points before the Gators closed some of the distance in the waning minutes.

The Lumberjacks make their final roadtrip of the CCAA season this week when they travel to face Chico State on Friday and Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday.
