TURLOCK — Putting up enough points in one half to win most games, Humboldt State blasted Cal State Stanislaus, 118-85 in men's basketball action Friday.
Scoring the second most points in school history, one short of the HSU record, the Jacks improved their record to 17-7 overall and 12-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State Stanislaus dropped to 5-19 overall and 4-13 in league.
Six Lumberjacks scored in double figures, led by
Devin Peal's 20 points in only 16 minutes on the court.
Grayson Moyer scored 18,
Cy Vandermeer 16, and
Will Sheufelt had 13 points, while reserves
Everett Smith and
Tyler Burns also hit double digits with season highs of 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Heath Colvin was Cal State Stanislaus' top scorer with 20 points, Rick Cardoso added 19 and Duane Jones had 18 for the Warriors.
HSU exploded out of the blocks, forcing the ball inside to Peal and Vandermeer for layups and kicking it out to Spada for threes. By the time the first five plus minutes had passed, HSU had already built a 25-10 lead.
The fireworks continued, HSU extending the lead to 24 points while shooting a red-hot 75 percent from the field. Cal State Stanislaus worked it down to 18, but
Efren Del Rio scored a layin before Moyer stole the inbounds pass and drained a three at the buzzer to put the Jacks up 67-44 at halftime.
Cal State Stanislaus regrouped in the early moments of the second half, working the lead down to 15 points on three-pointers by Jones and Colvin. That outburst awoke the sleeping giant, however, spurring the Jacks on another surge that pushed the lead past 30 points.
Humboldt State remains on the road for its final regular season game away from Arcata, taking on Chico State at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
