Jacks roll on the road again

CHICO — Humboldt State pulled away from Chico State, 93-71 Saturday, rolling to its fourth straight win and a sweep of the final regular season-roadtrip.

The victory improves the Lumberjacks record to 18-7 overall and 13-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Chico State dropped to 6-19 overall and 2-16 heading into the final week of the season.

Will Sheufelt put up another sharp-shooting performance for the Jacks, scoring 25 points by hitting nine of 12 shots from the field. Devin Peal had a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Grayson Moyer scored 18 points for Humboldt State.

Darroll Phillips was Chico State's primary weapon, leading all scorers with 28 points. Josh Jackson had 13 an Rod Hawkins 12 points, both players coming off the benhc.

HSU took charge quickly, Moyer's driving layin making the score 17-7 in favor of the Lumberjacks shortly before the Jacks' reserves came on the floor en masse. The second team kept the momentum going, Mike Kehrig's lob pass finding a streaking Nick Green for the slam that made it 24-11.

Ernie Spada's three-pointer gave HSU a 15-point lead, but Phillips got hot, hitting a three-pointer and a jumper to pull Chico State within single digits at 32-23.

It was Sheufelt's turn to heat up, the senior guard embarking on a personal 8-0 run that increased the advantage to 43-25. During the stretch, Sheufelt cleanly drained two three-pointers, sandwiching a shorter jumper in between.

Phillips hit another three, but Green ended the first half's scoring with a layup to give the Jacks a 45-32 lead at the break.

After HSU again threatened to run away, the Wildcats came surging back on the strength of tenacious defense. Jackson stole a pass and took it the distance for a layup to force HSU into calling a timeout, the Jacks lead trimmed to seven.

Everett Smith's three-pointer cut the charge short, however, and Shuefelt and Moyer quickly helped the Lumberjacks pull away. Their largest lead came at 22 points following a Moyer free throw, and the Jacks were content to play out the final minutes.

This week's games find the Lumberjacks back home to end the regular season. They welcome Cal State San Bernardino to the East Gym on Thursday and Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday.
