Jacks claim huge upset over CSUSB

ARCATA — Paige Peterson's big plays down the stretch finished off a solid 40 minutes of basketball, allowing Humboldt State to claim a 65-64 upset win over Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday.

The Jacks' win over the region's No. 3 ranked team improved their record to 15-11 overall and 11-8 in league games. Cal State San Bernardino, which came into the season's second-to-last game trailing Chico State by one game in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings, fell to 20-6 overall and 14-5 in league.

Peterson made a jumper that put the Jacks ahead with one minute, 45 seconds remaining, then blocked Vanessa Wilt's shot attempt on the other end of the court and grabbed the rebound. Following a HSU turnover, CSUSB had another attempt to go ahead, but after a missed three-pointer, Peterson again battled for the board, forcing it to out of bounds off of the Coyotes.

With 13 points, Peterson teammates Katie Franci and Brittney Taylor as the Jacks' leading scorers. Franci and Taylor also each grabbed nine rebounds, helping the Jacks to a 45-40 edge on the boards.

Wilt and Rachel Johnson each scored 18 points for the Coyotes, and Krystal Urzua added 10 off the bench. Wilt topped her team with 11 rebounds.

The Lumberjacks came out with the hotter hand as Taylor Kilgore hit a three-pointer right before Kayla Henry drove for a layin that put the Jacks ahead, 7-0.

Cal State San Bernardino remained composed, scoring the next eight points to take the lead on Stephanie Barnes' three-pointer. The momentum swings continued, as the Jacks scored the next eight points to again surge ahead.

For most of the second half the teams battled on even terms, regularly exchanging the lead. Humboldt State made the first big move, taking a 56-48 run by scoring eight straight points.

Cal State San Bernardino immediately answered, with a pair of Wilt free throws initiating an 11-0 run that included three straight three-pointers by Johnson. The final long bomb came with 4:54 remaining, providing the Coyotes with a 59-56 lead.

On Friday the Lumberjacks will honor seniors Kayla Henry and Jessica Haayer in a special ceremony prior to their final regular season game. Tip-off against Cal Poly Pomona is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the East Gym.
