HSU holds off CPP rally in regular season finale

ARCATA — Humboldt State held off Cal Poly Pomona's rally to claim a 55-51 win in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action Friday.

After the Broncos had whittled the lead down from 13 points to two, the Jacks' Kayla Henry came up with a huge rebound on the offensive end. The Jacks wound the clock down to eight seconds before CPP fouled Jennifer Enos, who hit two free throws to seal the win.

The victory improves HSU to 16-11 overall and 12-8 to end the CCAA's regular season. The Lumberjacks, who will advance into the league tournament opener next Tuesday, were led by Brittney Taylor's 13 points and 10 by Jennifer Enos.

Cal Poly Pomona fell to 11-15 with the loss, dropping to 8-12 in league play. In seventh place coming into the evening's action, the Broncos have also secured a spot in the eight-team tournament.

Humboldt State broke out its long range arsenal in the opening half, connecting on five shots from three-point range. Enos and Luiza Osborne each dropped in a pair of three-pointers, and Taylor Kilgore added another as the Jacks' lead swelled to 11 points.

Reyana Colson, who paced the Broncos with 16 points,  kept the game tight, however, scoring 12  in the opening period. By halftime they had pulled within six points at 28-22.

HSU edged out to a 13-point lead midway through the second period, and kept the Broncos at arm's length most of the way. Cal Poly Pomona kept its composure, starting a 12-2 run with Khiara Ferguson's layup with just over five minutes remaining, eventually cutting the Jacks' lead to 53-51.
