ARCATA — Going inside to their strength, the Humboldt State Lumberjacks powered past Cal State Los Angeles, 83-77 in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball action Saturday.

Devin Peal scored 29 points and Cy Vandermeer added 17 to help the Jacks improve to 13-6 overall and 8-4 in league games. Vincent Camper led the Golden Eagles in a comeback attempt, scoring 28 points to pace his squad.

"We wanted to press them, and we wanted to go inside," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "We also wanted to be able to sustain the intensity level, so we used a platoon system and gave our starters some rest. When they came back in they were relatively fresh."

Humboldt State expanded its lead to 18 points, Peal contributing eight points to a 11-3 run that started the second half. The Jacks maintained a double-digit lead most of the rest of the game before CSU Los Angeles made a final rush.

The Golden Eagles pulled as close as they would get at 78-73 on Demetrius Hazel's layup with 47 seconds remaining. But Grayson Moyer hit three free throws and Will Sheufelt two to preserve the win.

Also in double figures for Humboldt State were Moyer and Sheufelt with 12 points each, Moyer also contributing a game-high seven assists. Hazel has 11 points for CSULA and Tyler Polo 10.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Jacks, who stand in second place in the CCAA, one game behind CSU San Bernardino. This week, Humboldt State hosts Sonoma State on Wednesday before heading out for a Friday night game at UC San Diego.
