ARCATA — No. 5 regionally ranked Sonoma State dominated the second half offensively, also taking advantage of Humboldt State's offensive lapses to claim a 69-58 win over the Jacks on Wednesday.
Sonoma State improved its overall record to 15-5 while moving to 9-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Lumberjacks, who defeated the Seawolves in Rohnert Park earlier this season, dropped to 10-10 overall and 6-7 in the CCAA.
Hot shooting guards Genny Anderson and Lauren Redfield helped SSU gain the lead midway through the first half and held it the remainder of the game. Anderson topped all scorers with 16 points, while Redfield added 15, Danae Wellander had 12 and Chelsey Armacost cracked double figures with 11 for the Seawolves.
Sophomore guard
Paige Peterson was Humboldt State's primary scorer, leading the Jacks in scoring with 14 points.
Kayla Henry had 10 points for the Jacks, who shot 41 percent from the field.
In the early minutes, the Jacks eased in front, extending their lead to 15-8 on
Brittney Taylor's layup. But a a free throw by Taylor that put the Jacks up 16-10 was Humboldt State's final point for the next seven minutes, Sonoma State taking advantage with a 12-0 run.
Peterson finally broke the Jacks' slide with a layup and free throw after being fouled, but Wellander answered with a layup of her own. The trend of trading baskets continued until SSU began expanding the margin on Anderson's efforts.
Anderson scored the Seawolves' final seven points of the period, but
Taylor Kilgore kept the Jacks in striking range by hitting two three-pointers. Still, the Seawolves headed into halftime with a 36-31 lead.
Anderson continued to hit big shots and Armacost joined in during the early minutes of the second half, with her three-pointer. She and Wellander hit consecutive three-pointers to help the Seawolves gain a 12-point lead at 49-37.
HSU was unable to overcome the deficit, which grew to 16 points before HSU made up some ground in the final minutes.
Humboldt State goes on the road for its next game, taking on UC San Diego at 5:30 p.m. in La Jolla.
