ARCATA — Pushing the pace throughout, Humboldt State put away Sonoma State early on the way to a 86-60 California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball victory on Wednesday.

Cy Vandermeer put up a monster performance of 19 points and 15 rebounds in only 26 minutes to lead the Lumberjacks, who improved to 14-6 overall and 9-4 in league. Also in double figures were Grayson Moyer, with 15 points, and Devin Peal, with 10 and eight rebounds.

Gerred Link came off the bench to score 14 points for Sonoma State. Blake Saunders and Ben Washington each had 11 points for the Seawolves, who fell to 9-10 overall and 5-8 in the CCAA.

HSU's second unit turned up the intensity minutes into the game, using a fullcourt press to dictate the tempo. By the time the group of Efren Del Rio, Nick Green, Jameson Figgatt, Everett Smith and Mike Kehrig left the court Humboldt had established a 24-14 lead, Del Rio contributing two three-pointers to the run.

The starting group returned and maintained the pace through the final eight minutes of the first half, Vandermeer doing the damage inside on his way to a double-double by halftime. Moyer finished the period with a layup and two free throws to stake the Jacks to a 48-24 lead at the break.

The second half featured more of the same dominance, as the Lumberjacks built a 34-point lead before emptying the bench. The victory avenged a defeat the Jacks suffered to the Seawolves on the road on Jan. 2.

Humboldt State is back in action Friday, traveling to face UC San Diego in La Jolla.
