Jacks rally to sweep season-series with UCSD

LA JOLLA — Humboldt State rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to earn a 76-65 victory over UCSD and a sweep of the season series form the No. 7 regionally ranked Tritons.

With the win, the Jacks improved to 11-10 overall and 7-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. UC San Diego dropped to 16-7 on the season and 8-5 in league games.

"This was a true team effort, with a lot of different players contributing," HSU head coach Joddie Gleason said. "We had key people in there at the end who have been in big games before. They showed tonight that they know how to win."

The team balance was clearly evident in the Jacks' scoring output, with five players reaching double figures. Taylor Kilgore led the way with 12 points, Katie Franci, Jennifer Enos and Paige Peterson all added 11, and Kayla Henry had 10 for the Lumberjacks.

Franci, who was limited to 20 minutes of court time with foul trouble, also had a team-high 13 rebounds, including three offensive boards in the final minute that helped seal the win.

Humboldt State led by as many as five points in the first half before suffering an extended scoring drought that lasted for six minutes. UC San Diego took advantage, Meaghan Noud scoring 15 points in the opening period to help the Tritons forge a 34-24 advantage at the break.

Noud led the Tritons in scoring with 25 points. Michelle Osier scored 13 for UCSD, also contributing a team-high 13 rebounds.

Slowly but surely, HSU closed the distance in early minutes of the second half, trimming the Tritons' lead to 38-35 when Peterson hit a three-pointer rims  it to 38-35. 2:30 to go. exchanged baskets.

Humboldt State continued its comeback, drawing within one at 40-39 on Franci's drive and layin. Kristina O'Keefe's putback off a missed free throw tied the score at 45-45, and Enos stole the inbounds pass and laid it in for a 47-45 HSU lead.

The Jacks held the momentum to gain an eight-point lead, but UCSD pulled within five again. Following another UCSD timeout, Alaba worked the clock down to three seconds before draining a three-pointer form the top of the key. 64-55 lead with four minutes remaining.

The Lumberjacks are back home this week, taking on Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday and San Francisco State on Saturday.
