LA JOLLA — Humboldt State was unable to counter UC San Diego's disciplined offense, falling to the Tritons, 84-72 in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball action Friday.
UC San Diego earned repeated trips to the free throw line in the second half, helping the Tritons recover from a four-point halftime deficit. In all, the Tritons were 24 of 29 from the line in the second half, 30 of 37 total for the game.
Leading the balanced scoring effort for UCSD was Kelvin Kim with 14 points, helping his team improve to 13-6 overall and 9-5 in the CCAA.
Devin Peal had 27 points to pace HSU, which fell to 14-7 and 9-5.
Also in double figures for the Jacks was
Grayson Moyer with 11 points. Rounding out UCSD's scoring were Darryl Lawlor with 13 points, Clint Allard with 11, and Shane Poppen and Jordan Lawley with 10 each.
Playing without the services of big man
Cy Vandermeer, who injured his right knee only six minutes into the game, the Jacks saw their slim lead vanish in the early moments of the second half. Patterson pulled the Tritons within two with a short jumper, and Lwley broke free for a layup that tied the game at 35-35.
Looking to the bench for a lift again, the Jacks received one from
Mike Kehrig, whose slick pass found
James Givens open for an easy layup. Lawlor hit the wide open three form teh corner for a 41-40 lead at 13 minute mark. Andrew Hatch drove for a layup and hit a free throw after being fouled, pushing UCSD's lead to four.
Humboldt State tied the game twice, but found it difficult to stop the Tritons disciplined offense, which repeatedly ran the clock down before usually earning free throws.
Bringing intensity to the floor early in the first half was the Jacks' second unit, using the fullcourt press to force consecutive turnovers.
Everett Smith contributed a three-pointer as HSU gained a 10-point lead.
UCSD rallied to pull within three points by going inside via guard penetration. Clint Allard and Kevlin Kim successful drove for layups, and HSU had to settle for a 33-29 lead at halftime.
The Lumberjacks return home this week for a Friday game against CSU Monterey Bay and a Saturday contest against San Francisco State.
