ARCATA — A combination of youngsters and veterans worked together effectively Saturday, helping Humboldt State to 5-3 and 6-2 victories over San Francisco State and a sweep of the weekend softball series.

Combined with Friday's doubleheader sweep, Saturday's two wins improved Humboldt State to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. San Francisco State dropped to 2-6 and 0-4 in league.

Senior Lizzy Presscott received all the run support she needed from her freshman hitters on her way to picking up two more pitching victories. The Jacks' ace gave up three runs in 13 innings of work spread over the two games, striking out 13 to improve her season record to 6-1 on the season.

Freshman leftfielder Nikki Ketteringham drove in four runs with four hits, including a pair of doubles, to lead the Jacks' offense. Another freshman, shortstop Kirsten Nouzouvsky, added two hits and an RBI in the second game, also contributing two outstanding fielding plays to protect the lead.

"They're learning every time out," HSU head coach Frank Cheek said of his freshmen. "They're off to a great start, but they're going to be even better by the end of the season."

Also getting into the mix was junior second baseman Caitlin Klug, who launched a mammoth home run leading off the bottom of the first inning in the opener. Her line drive rocketed off the scoreboard beyond the left field fence.

San Francisco State's top hitters on the day were shorstop Monica Amburgey, who had three hits, including a home run, along with Kendra Wood and Lea Cardenas, both of whom contributed solo home runs in the second game.

Humboldt State goes on the road this week to Schutt's Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz., on Friday and Saturday.
