Lumberjacks earn share of CCAA title

ARCATA — Humboldt State earned its second straight California Collegiate Athletic Association championship, knocking off Cal Poly Pomona 79-71 in the regular season finale Friday.

HSU shares the title with Cal State San Bernardino, a 65-51 winner over Sonoma State on Friday. The Lumberjacks entered the week a game behind CSUSB, but pulled even with a win over the Coyotes on Thursday.

In their final regular season game in front of the home fans, all four of the Jacks' seniors scored in double figures. Will Sheufelt led the way with 16 points, while Devin Peal, Grayson Moyer and Cy Vandermeer all finished with 14 points. Also getting in on the action was the Jacks' fifth starter, freshman Ernie Spada, who contributed 10 points.

"(The seniors) will remember championship seasons into their old age," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "They make it happen.  They stepped up and played the way seniors need to in big games."

Humboldt State ended its second campaign in the CCAA with a 15-5 record, improving to 20-7 overall heading into Tuesday's opener of the CCAA Tournament. Cal Poly Pomona fell to 10-10 in league and 11-14 overall.

The Lumberjacks had moments when they appeared ready to pull away, but the Broncos answered every challenge. Following a tight first half, the Jacks came out firing to start the second, quickly gaining a 14-point lead at 52-38.

Eight minutes later, the Broncos gained their first lead since early in the game, moving ahead 58-57 on Angelo Tsagarakis' three-pointer. Humboldt State moved back ahead on Moyer's layup and didn't trail the rest of the way.

As one of the top four seeds, HSU will host the CCAA Tournament opener on Tuesday, with tip-off at 7 p.m. in the East Gym.  The Jacks' first-round opponent will be determined tonight and the pairings will be posted on the league website at www.goccaa.org.
