HSU sweeps CSUS again, stays unbeaten in league

TURLOCK – Humboldt State swept another softball doubleheader from Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday, adding 2-1 and 6-3 wins to go 4-0 against the Warriors on the weekend.
 
With the wins, the Lumberjacks improved their record to 15-4 overall and 8-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association while the Warriors fell to 5-13 overall and 2-6 in CCAA play.
 
The Jacks secured the win in the opener in the top of the eighth with a single by Ashley Oltjenbruns, who was then driven in by Caitlin Klug's  double to left field. Most of the game featured a pitching duel between HSU's Lizzy Prescott and Stanislaus ace Jessica Gaumnitz
 
Following six scoreless innings, HSU scored the first run in the top of the seventh when Nikki Ketteringham tripled before Natalie Galletly was intentionally walked. After Hannah Jones entered the game to pinch run for Galletly and stole second, Francesca West singled to center field to drive in Ketteringham.
 
The Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on Meghan Franksen's home run, sending the game into extra innings.
 
“Cal State Stanislaus has two good pitchers who helped them take the West Region last year,” said Humboldt State head softball coach Frank Cheek. “We knew they were going to be tough.”
 
In the second game, HSU scored two runs in the top of seventh to seal the victory. The final two runs came home on a double by Klug, after Nouzovsky and Geneva Perrine had reach on walks.
 
The Jacks had  moved on top, 3-1 in the second inning, starting the rally when Galletly walked and advanced to third on West's single. Oltjenbruns then singled down the left field line to advance West to second and drive in Galletly to tie the game 1-1.
 
HSU added two more runs when West came home on Vanessa Shernock's single and Oltjenbruns scored when Kirsten Nouzovsky doubled to center field.
 
Prescott earned all four pitching wins in the pair of doubleheader sweeps, improving, her record to 15-2 overall and 8-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association competition. She gave up seven hits, one home run and struck out 12 in 15 innings of play on Saturday.
 
Before coming ome,  Jacks stop in Belmont on Sunday for a non-conference doubleheader against Notre Dame de Namur, with an 11 a.m. start.
