Lumberjacks drop doubleheader to NDNU

BELMONT – Humboldt State dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Notre Dame de Namur on Sunday, falling 6-3 in the opener and 7-6 in the second game.

The pair of losses ended an otherwise bright weekend that had featured four straight league wins before the Jacks took on the Argonauts. The difference was the absence of HSU ace pitcher Lizzy Prescott, who was the winner in all four victories over Cal State Stanislaus, but was held out of Sunday's game.

“We dropped both games today because we're one dimensional,” said Humboldt State head softball coach Frank Cheek. “We couldn't and didn't use Lizzy (Prescott). We suffered a devastating loss and took two steps back because we don't have a number two pitcher who can hold a lead.”

Pitchers Jenna Anderson, Kristina Lewis and Hannah Mullen-Jones all put in innings, and all were hit hard by the Argonauts' offense. Lewis was tagged with the loss in the opener and Mullen-Jones suffered the defeat in the nightcap.

In game one, HSU took an early lead ,tallying a run in the first inning and two in the third to move ahead 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.

The Argos tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with Danielle Holt hitting a three-run homer. NDNU moved ahead and sealed the by game tallying two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.

The Lumbjeracks took another early lead in the second game, but squandered it again. In the first inning, Nikki Ketteringham singled and Natalie Galletly singled to advance before Francesca West then reached on a fielder's choice, that plated Ketteringham and advanced Galletly to second. Lindsay Warren then singled to bring Galletly home.

Galletly hit a solo home run to start of the third, and Chrissy Motzny doubled to drive in Ashley Oltjenbruns and Warren for two more runs. In the fourth, HSU moved ahead 6-0 when Warren drove in Galettly with a single.

The Argonauts answered back, scoring all seven runs in the fourth inning, the big blows a two-run homer by Cierra Kenney and a two-run double from Tara Van Meter. Kenney also pitched the final three innings, keeping the Jacks' scoreless to secure the win.

The Jacks, now 13-6 overall, hit the road once again this week, traveling to Monmouth, Ore., for the Western Oregon  Shootout on Saturday and Sunday.
