MONMOUTH, Ore. –
Jenna Anderson,
Hannah Jones and Kristina Lewis combined to pitch Humboldt State to a sweep of Northwest Nazarene, with a 10-2 win in the opener and a 10-0 shutout in the second game at the Western Oregon Shootout on Saturday.
In game one, HSU started off on the right foot, scoring the first four runs of the game in the top of the first.
Francesca West walked and then advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Nikki Ketteringham reached on an error by NNU's second baseman, advancing West to third. West then scored an unearned run on
Natalie Galletly's ground out to second.
A walk, an error and a wild pitch sent Ketteringham home before the final runs of the inning came in on
Marissa Slattery's double down the left field line. For the game, Slattery totaled three doubles,
Chrissy Motzny tallied two and Ketteringham added another.
Anderson pitched 2.2 innings, giving up NNU's lone runs in the second and striking out three. Jones came in to pitch 3.1 innings, registering three strikeouts, and Lewis contributed one scoreless inning.
In the second game the Jacks earned the win by the mercy rule, ending it in the sixth behind Jones' complete game and second pitching win of the day. HSU improved it's overall record 17-6, while NNU fell to 0-19.
Jones finished off a two-hit, 12-strikeout performance in the second game for a total of 15 strikeouts on the day.
“Hannah (Jones) stepped up today as she struck out 15 batters,” said Humboldt State head softball coach Frank Cheek. “I was thinking about taking her out in the second game, but I'm glad I didn't because she went the distance."
HSU tallied three runs in the bottom of the first and one in the second to gain a 4-0 lead. After one run came in on a fielders choice, the bases remained loaded until Galletly launched a game-ending grand slam home run.
At 11 a.m. Sunday the Lumberjacks take on Western Oregon, the top-ranked team from the west, according to this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll. The doubleheader concludes the three-day Western Oregon Shootout.
"Tomorrow we play the No. 1 team in the West, which is a rarity for us, seeing as the No. 1 ranked team in the West is usually us,” Cheek said.
