Jacks take doubleheader from Western Oregon

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Humboldt State went undefeated at the Western Oregon Shootout after taking both games from No. 8 nationally ranked Western Oregon on Sunday.

The Jacks defeated the Wolves 6-1 in the first game and took the second game with a 2-0 shutout. Humboldt State improved it's record to 19-6 overall and Western Oregon dropped to 10-5.

Lizzy Prescott improved her overall record 17-2 after pitching 13 innings, and tallying 16 strikeouts and giving up four hits with only one earned run, a home run by the Wolves' Katie Fleer. Hannah Jones also made an appearance in game one, pitching one scoreless inning.

In the opener, HSU pulled ahead with four runs in the top of the fourth inning.  Kirsten Nouzovsky started the outburst with a single and then advanced to second on a wild pitch before Caitlin Klug walked.  Nouzovsky and Klug both advanced on another wild pitch before Nikki Ketteringham drove them both in with a single.

Ketteringham scored when Natalie Galletly then reached on an error by the right fielder and advanced to second before pinch hitter Joanna Schultz singled her home to cap the inning's scoring. Galletly added a solo home run in the fifth and Ketteringham doubled in another run in the sixth to round out the scoring.

Nouzovsky went two-for-two plus a walk and tied with Galletly with three RBIs on the day, while Galletly and Ketteringham both went two-for-four in game one.

HSU scored single runs in the first and second innings against Christina Cooke to give Prescott all the offense that she would need in the second game.

“Lizzy (Prescott) got the wins after pitching 180 pitches,” said Cheek, whose team had split a doubleheader in Arcata earlier this season. "We are now 3-1 with Western Oregon and we feel pretty good about that.”

The Lumberjacks return to California Collegiate Athletic Association play as they travel to Carson for two weekend doubleheaders against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
