CAL POLY HUMBOLDT ATHLETICS

Lumberjacks take two from Tritons

ARCATA – Lizzy Prescott dominated from the pitching circle and her teammates supplied the defensive and offensive support, allowing Humboldt State to sweep Friday's softball doubleheader with UC San Diego by scores of 1-0 and 8-3.

The two wins improved HSU to 38-14 overall and 15-7 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, while UC San Diego drops to 28-16 overall and 13-11 in the CCAA. Humboldt State moved slipped back into first place, edging ahead of CSU Stanislaus, which split a doubleheader with San Francisco State on Friday.

In game one, Prescott (29-7) mowed down Triton hitters, striking out 12 batters, including the first four of the game, while only allowing two hits. Melissa Ward (13-10) picked up the loss, giving up six hits and striking out four while going the distance.

The only run of the game came on Geneva Perrine's RBI single in the second inning, which drove in Lindsay Warren, who had doubled with one out.

Chrissy Motzny got the Jacks' offense going immediately in game two, driving in a run in the first inning with a double off of Tritons starter Lauren Chastain. The Jacks added three runs in the third inning on Caitlin Klug's solo homer and Natalie Galletly's two-run home run, both shots coming off Ward, who had relieved Chastain in the second inning.

UC San Diego scored its first runs of the afternoon in the sixth inning on a Sarah Woofter two-run homer and a Danielle Lukk RBI single. But the Jacks answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning on RBI singles from Francesca West and Nikki Ketteringham.

One of the game's defensive highlights came in the fourth, when Warren tracked down Jenni Habib's double, threw a strike to Klug, who nailed Habib at third with a perfect relay throw to West. Another gem ended the game, Perrine ranging far into the third base hold from her shortstop position to field Sarah Woofter's grounder before firing it to first for the out.

Prescott recorded 11 strikeouts in game two, once again going the distance for the win. Chastain (9-3) suffered the loss, pitching only one inning and allowing three hits while striking out one.

Humboldt State will be back on the field again Saturday for another doubleheaders  against UC San Diego. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
