ARCATA – The Humboldt State softball team took both ends of  Saturday's doubleheader against UC San Diego, winning 2-0 and 5-3 to sweep the key California Collegiate Athletic Association four-game series.
 
Lizzy Prescott earned both wins, pitching a pair complete games, striking out eight batters, and giving up three earned runs combined. In game one, UCSD's Allison May ended Prescott's no-hit bid with a one-out single in the seventh inning.
 
Melissa Ward took the loss in game one, pitching a complete game, striking out two and giving up one earned run. In game two, three Triton pitchers were victimized by the Jacks, starter Lauren Chastain sustaining the loss by  giving up four runs and striking out four in five innings of work.
 
Game one remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the Lumberjacks pushed across two runs on RBI singles from Francesca West and Caitlin Klug. Those two runs proved enough for Prescott, who improved to 31-7 on the year.
 
In the second game, the Jacks claimed an early lead when Joanna Schultz singled to drive in Nikki Ketteringham. But the Tritons answered back in the top of the sixth  when Katrin Gabriel and May scored on Jennifer Habib's single to put UCSD ahead, 2-1.
 
With one out in the seventh, a hit batsman, walk and West's single loaded the bases for HSU. Klug provided the clutch hit, hammering a grand slam to right-center for her third home run of the series.
 
The Lumberjacks improved their record 40-14 overall and 17-7 in league while the Tritons fell to 28-18 overall and 13-13 in the CCAA.
 
Humboldt State takes its final regular season roadtrip this wek, traveling to Rohnert Park to take on Sonoma State in Friday and Saturday doubleheaders. Friday's games start at 1 p.m., while Saturday's first pitch is at 11 a.m.
