ROHNERT PARK – The Humboldt State softball team moved a step closer to its goal of a league title by taking 3-1 and 3-0 victories in Friday's doubleheader against Sonoma State.
 
The Jacks improved their record to a 42-14 overall and 19-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while Sonoma State fell to 16-30 overall and 3-21 in conference.

Lizzy Prescott earned both pitching wins with two complete games. The Jacks' senior ace struck out 18 batters and gave up one run off of seven hits on the day, improving her record to 33-7.

“Lizzy (Prescott) had a good day,” HSU head coach Frank Cheek said. “It was hot and the weather gave her some trouble, but she was able to get through it."
 
In the opener, the Lumberjacks put up a run in the third inning with a double by Marissa Slattery that drove in Nikki Ketteringham.  Natalie Galletly hammered a two-run homer to drive in Ketteringham in the fifth to complete the scoring.
 
The Seawolves' only run came in the bottom of the fifth when Shyrle Hawes scored on a wild pitch.
 
In game two,  the Jacks finally broke through in the seventh to end a scoreless drought for both teams.  Caitlin Klug reached on an error, stole second and then advanced to third off of a ground out third before Galletly and Slattery were intentionally walked to fill the bases.

With two outs, Chrissy Motzny came through with a three-run double. Prescott gave up a double before retiring three straight Seawolves in the bottom of the frame to preserve the win.
 
Humboldt State continues its CCAA series with Sonoma State with an 11 a.m. doubleheader Saturday in Rohnert Park.
