Lizzy Prescott's arm the Humboldt State softball team took two more games from Sonoma State, winning 2-0 and 7-3 Saturday to complete its California Collegiate Athletic Association weekend series sweep.
Prescott (35-7) collected both wins, striking out 13 batters while giving up one run off of four hits. Kristina Lewis made an appearance in game two, striking out one batter in an inning pitched.
The victory gives HSU a three-game lead over Cal State Stanislaus on top the CCAA standings heading into the final regular-season series, set for Friday and Saturday. Four games remain for both the Jacks and Warriors.
“We're three games up in conference,” HSU head coach Frank Cheek said. “We would have to lose all four games next weekend to lose the league title.”
In Saturday's opener, the Jacks put up single runs in the third and sixth innings.
Nikki Ketteringham's singled home
Caitlin Klug, who had reached on a leadoff double, for the first run, and
Francesca West drove in
Marissa Slattery with a single in for the second.,
In the second game, the Jacks claimed an early advantage with two runs in the first inning and one in third before the Seawolves were able to answer back in the bottom of the third with a run, to trail 3-1.
The Jacks added two more runs in the fourth and one each in the fifth and sixth innings to complete the scoring. SSU posted two runs in the sixth, off Lewis.
“We had a little trouble compared to yesterday,” Cheek said. “We hit the ball pretty hard today, but made some base running mistakes that would have provided us with more runs. We're just not running with much authority.”
HSU improved its record to a 44-14 overall and 21-7 in the CCAA, while Sonoma State now holds a 16-32 overall and 3-23 CCAA record.
Leading the Jacks' hitters was Slattery who went 5-for-7, while Klug and Ketteringham went 3-for-5 and Motzny went 4-for-7 on the day.
Before finishing out the CCAA regular season with four games at home against Chico State next weekend, HSU takes a break from league play to host a doubleheader with Notre Dame de Namur at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
