Jacks complete road sweep with win over Warriors

TURLOCK — Keeping a comfortable distance between themselves and Cal State Stanislaus throughout, the Humboldt State Lumberjacks forged a 82-74 win Saturday to complete a sweep of their California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball two-game roadtrip.

HSU held a double-digit lead until the final seconds of the game, with a balanced effort contributing to the final outcome. The Jacks led by as many as 18 points before the Warriors put together a late surge that accounted for the final score.

Zac Tiedeman led the way again for HSU with 18 points, nailing four of five three-pointers, and Kyle Baxter scored 15 for HSU. Owen Newman and Mike Kehrig also hit double digits, each scoring 10 points to help HSU improve to 12-4 overall and 5-1 in the CCAA.

Benny Koochoie topped all scorers wtih 24 points, while Chris Teevan and Chris Hayes each contributed 12 for the Warriors, who fell to 4-7 overall and 0-6 in league games.

Tiedeman and Ernie Spada made good on open looks from long range in the early minutes, including a 30-foot launch by the former that found the bottom of the net. Elliot Babock-Krenk fired in a 12-footer and Tiedeman's second rocket expanded the Jacks lead to 25-14.

Cal State Stanislaus managed to contain the damage, and trimmed the lead under double digits on Michael Dyson's short jumper. Hayes spun in the lane for a fadeaway that made it 32-26, and the lead dwindled to four on Koochoie's hanging jumper.

Mike Kehrig broke the momentum with a court-length pass to Kevin Atkins, who slammed it down to send HSU into halftime with a 36-30 lead.

Newman took over in the paint for the Jacks as the second half began, benefiting from slick passes from Kehrig and Tiedeman. The senior post scored six quick points, pushing the lead to 44-31.

Two straight shots by the Warriors hung on the rim and dropped in, pulling them within seven points. But Newman dropped in a layup and Tiedeman hit another three off the inbounds to give the Jacks a 12-point advantage at 55-43.

HSU returns home next week for a pair of CCAA games in Lumberjack Arena. Cal Poly Pomona visits Friday and Cal State San Bernardino comes to town Saturday.
