ARCATA — Keeping the tempo up and the pace frantic, Humboldt State shook free of San Francisco State with a big second-half effort on the way to a 60-40 victory in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action
Friday.
Despite early foul trouble,
Katie Franci posted a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Jacks in both categories.
Brittney Taylor added 11 points, helping the Jacks improve to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA.
"This was a quality win at home and
tomorrow we play another good team," Humboldt State head women's basketball coach
Joddie Gleason said. "It is always nice to start conference with a winning record because every game is competitive and tough."
San Francisco State dropped to 7-3 overall and 1-2 in league games. The Gators were led offensively by Desiree Butler's 14 points, and Krystle Mays topped her team with eight rebounds.
Turnovers, forced by S.F. State's swarming defense, kept the Lumberjacks from gaining much of a lead in the first half. They managed to extend the advantage to 21-10 following
Trisha Alaba's three-pointer, but saw that cushion evaporate when two turnovers and a foul let the Gators pull within 21-18 on
May's layup.
On HSU's next possession,
Paige Peterson drove the floor for a successful short jumper that gave the momentum back to the Jacks. Peterson missed on her next trip down court, but Taylor was there for the rebound and putback that sent Humboldt State into halftime with a 25-18 lead.
"During halftime we talked about taking care of the ball and continuing to rebound well and I'm happy with how our team responded," Gleason said.
HSU kept the Gators at an arm's length through the early minutes of the second half, never allowing the lead to dwindle beneath five points. The decisive surge began when Franci hit a pair of free throws and Taylor dropped home a layup to give the Jacks a 41-30 lead with 10:05 left on the clock.
The Gators were able to keep the lead from growing beyond 12 points over the next five minutes before Humboldt State finished off the game with a 14-4 run.
"SF State is an athletic and physical team," Gleason said. "They're a solid team and it will be tough to play them at their place."
Humboldt State returns to the court
Saturday for another CCAA matchup, taking on Cal State Monterey Bay at 5:30 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.
