Hot shot Jacks take down Otters, 77-71

ARCATA — Raining three-pointers, Humboldt State pushed past Cal State Monterey Bay with a second-half surge on the way to a 77-71 win in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball action Saturday.

Shooting 63 percent from three-point range on a 12-of-19 effort, the Jacks swept the weekend's league games to improve their record to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in the CCAA. Cal State Monterey Bay fell to 9-2 and is also 3-1 in conference.

"We made some changes at halftime, and our motion offense did a good job of getting the ball inside," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "That gave us some momentum, then we went on that three-point barrage."

Another balanced effort for HSU featured three players scoring in double digits and two others with nine points on the evening. Freshman Keith Davis led the list with 13 points, followed by Ernie Spada and Kevin Atkins with 10, and David Howard and Kyle Baxter with nine each.

After taking their first lead of the evening at 41-40 on Spada's three-pointer with 16 minutes, 29 seconds remaining, the Lumberjacks held an advantage the rest of the way. Spada and Baxter both drained threes during a 12-3 Lumberjack run that saw the lead balloon to 13 points.

Cal State Monterey Bay didn't fold, however, starting its comeback attempt on Stephen Becker's three-pointer with 2:45 left on the clock. The Otters trimmed the advantage down to two points on Jose Sanchez' jumper, but Elliot Babcock-Krenk hit a free throw and Zac Tiedeman made two more to finish off the Otters in the waning seconds.

Joe Mitchell paced CSUMB with 17 points while also grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. Keith Wilson also added 17, and Warren Freeman had 11 points for the Otters.

Eight different players launched three-pointers for HSU, with Spada hitting 3-of-4 and Baxter 3-of-5 on the evening. Babcock-Krenk made both of his attempts and Davis added 2-of-3.

The Lumberjacks travel for their next two conference matchups, first taking on Chico State at 7:30 p.m. Friday. They'll head further down the road to Turlock for Saturday's game against Cal State Stanislaus.
