Head-to-Head: Having played the Wildcats more often than any other opponent in program history, the Jacks trail in the series, 66-105. Humboldt State claimed wins in both games a year ago. …After taking two wins from the Warriors last year, the Lumberjacks hold a slim 31-28 lead in the all-time series.
Lumberjack Notes: Positive signs of that forementioned progress were evident in the Jacks' pair of victories coming off the holiday break. Taking on two formidable opponents in San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay, the Jacks were able to prevail by using a variety of personnel and court tactics. "Among the lessons learned were that we can play fast and furious, which is something we want to do," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "We were able to do that by using a lot of people for a short time and keeping fresh. We also learned that when we need to, we can adjust and play hard halfcourt defense." …Improving their record to 10-4 overall, the Lumberjacks also moved into a five-way tie for first in the CCAA standings at 3-1. …Humboldt State's 63 percent shooting effort from three-point range
Saturday was exceptional, but by no means out of the ordinary. For the season, the Jacks rank first in the CCAA in three-pointers made with 124, and are fourth in long-range shooting percentage at 37 percent. Individually,
Ernie Spada leads the league in three-pointers made with 33 and in threes per game with 2.4. Zac Tiedeman ranks second in successful threes with 27, and is sixth in three-pointers per game at 1.9. …Spreading the minutes among 13 players
may take a toll on the Jacks' individual statistical rankings, but it also allows more players a chance to impact the game. Twelve Lumberjacks saw double-digits in minutes played
Friday, and 11 were on the court more than 10 minutes
Saturday. …In 14 games this season, the Lumberjacks have employed 11 different starting lineups. Zac Tiedeman and
Jameson Figgatt are the only players to have started every game.
Opponents Notes: Chico State is 4-7 overall and 1-3 in league heading into this week's games. The Wildcats are unbeaten on their own court, where they've claimed three of their four victories. Last weekend Chico State split on one of the toughest CCAA roadtrips, defeating Cal Poly Pomona, 55-47 before falling to Cal State San Bernardino, 75-57. …Senior post Andy Bocian is back in action this season after sitting out last year, and has promptly taken over the scoring leadership with an average of 21.6 points per game. He alsotops teh team in rebounding with 5.5 boards per game. …Senior guard Junior Russell averages 18.8 points pare game, and another senior, York Sims, puts up 12.0 per outing. Senior guard Justin Argenal ranks second in the league with an average of 4.7 assists per game. … Cal State Stanislaus is 4-5 overall and 0-4 in the CCAA after a torrid start followed by a rocky stretch. The Warriors won their first three games, but have since dropped five of six, falling to CSUSB, 92-68, and Cal Poly Pomona, 90-66, last weekend. …Junior forward Matt Ibewiro is the Warriors' leading scorer with an average of 13.2 points per game, Also hitting double digits are senior guard Benny Koochoie with 12.7 per contest, and senior center Michael Dyson, with 11.4 points. Ibewiro also tops the team in rebounding with 7.8 boards per game.
Wood's Words: "A lot of us would be 1-3 in league after playing those first four road games that Chico State has played. What they did manage was pulling out a bit win at Pomona, which we are well aware is a tough accomplisment. This conference seems to be a home-court conference, and I'm sure they're anxious to play conference games at home this week." … "Chico State has a lot of weapons. They have a scoring big man in Andy Bocian and two very good guards in Argenall and Russell." …"Cal State Stanislaus is a lot like us in that they're almost a completely new team that is trying to get used to one another and put it together. It takes awhile to get that chemistry." … "I don't separate these teams on this trip. I think we have a tough battle in store in both Chico and Stanislaus."
