SEATTLE, Wash. – Facing the team that ended its 2008-09 season in the NCAA West Region Championships, the Humboldt State women's basketball team came up short again, falling 74-62 to Seattle Pacific on Saturday at the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic.
The loss leaves the Jacks record at 1-1. SPU improves to 2-0 on the season.
Box Score
HSU shot just 32.8 percent from the field for the game compared to Seattle Pacific's 45.3 percent and SPU outrebounded the Jacks 50-35.
“The keys to the win for SPU were our poor shooting, their rebounding and the number of second chance points that they had,” head coach
Joddie Gleason said.
SPU's Megan Hoisington, who led all scorers with 17 points and added 10 rebounds, hit a layup with 17 minutes, 19 seconds left in the first half to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead. Four minutes later an
Andrea Bobic free throw, cut the lead to two, 12-10.
But the Jacks' offense then went cold. Over the next nine minutes they were outscored 17-3 as SPU built their biggest lead of the half, 16 points, at 29-13. The two teams traded buckets over the final four minutes, 27 seconds of the half and Seattle Pacific took a 37-24 advantage to half time.
“We were playing great to start and then they changed defenses on us,” Gleason said. “All of a sudden we had a really tough time scoring and gave up too many easy buckets. We got to 10 points and stayed there for what seemed like forever.”
The Jacks shot just 31 percent for the half (9-of-29) and 13 percent from behind the 3-point line (2-for 15). The Falcons scored 11 points off HSU turnovers and added six second-chance points while shooting 50 percent (14-of-27) from the floor.
In the first two minutes of the second half, HSU twice cut the Seattle Pacific lead to nine points. But with 17 minutes, 52 seconds remaining and the score 41-32, the Jacks offense again went cold. SPU outscored the Jacks 23-10 and built its largest lead of the game, 22 points at 64-42, with eight minutes, 17 seconds left in the game.
A
Taylor Kilgore free throw followed by two 3-pointers cut the SPU advantage to 15 at 64-49. Bobic then hit consecutive threes to make it a nine-point game with four minutes, 14 seconds left. A
Paige Peterson layup with 56 seconds remaining left the Jacks eight points down, but HSU would get no closer and lost 74-62.
Brittney Taylor led the Lumberjacks with 12 points and three rebounds. Bobic had 10 points and four rebounds. For the second consecutive game
Bree Halsey led HSU with nine boards and in her first action of the regular season freshman
Caitie Richards had nine points.
For Seattle Pacific, Nyesha Sims and Sydney Benson had 12 points each in addition to Hoisington's game-high 17.
“Paige (Peterson) and Kayla (Williams) were given the job of guarding Daesha Henderson,” Gleason said. “She is one of the best guards in the region and has been on fire so far this year. They held her to just six points, which if it is not her career low must be close. I thought they did a really nice job on her.
“SPU is very deep and disciplined team. They keep throwing people at you and playing very hard. This was a really good test for us at this point in the year, we just didn't play well in several aspects and that was the difference.”
Humboldt State returns to action on Tuesday in Rhonert Park as they open California Collegiate Athletic Association play at Sonoma State. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and can be followed on livestats at www.hsujacks.com.
