ARCATA — Sonoma State scored the first 12 straight points of the second half to take control on the way to a 65-50 win over Humboldt State in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball action Saturday.
Humboldt State dropped to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA after shooting only 30 percent from the field and being outrebounded, 41-25. Sonoma State improved to 2-5 overall and 2-1 in league.
"It was just a bad performance by us tonight," Humboldt State head coach Tom Wood said. "We didn't make the effort, didn't have the intensity and didn't have any heart. Sonoma State out-played us and they deserved to win."
Chad Chambers scored 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field to pace the Seawolves, topping four players in double figures. Steve Pratt scored 11 points, while Kyle Shandera and Mike Nelson each contributed 10 for SSU.
Brian Morris, who scored the first seven points of the game in helping HSU gain a 7-0 lead, finished with 13 poitns to lead the Lumberjacks.
Zac Tiedeman added nine points.
Humboldt State grabbed a 14-point lead midway through the opening half when
Elliot Babcock-Krenk drained a three-pointer. Sonoma State surged back with a 10-1 run that ended the half, and trailed only 30-28 at the break.
The Seawolves carried that momentum over into the second half, starting their run with a layup by Nelson. A free throw by
Kyle Baxter finally ended the surge, but the Jacks wouldn't get any closer than six points the rest of the way.
Humboldt State is back in action next weekend, hosting the DeBeni Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Jacks' first game in the event is a 7:30 p.m. matchup with Academy of Art on Friday.
