ARCATA — Only 10 days after suffering a rough loss in their home arena, Humboldt State exacted furious revenge on the same opponent, Sonoma State, with a 96-55 California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball victory Tuesday.
Humboldt State improved its overall record to 6-3 and moved to 3-1 in the CCAA heading into the 2010 portion of the season. Sonoma State dropped to 3-6 in all contests and 2-2 in league.
For the third straight game, no single Lumberjack player saw more than 22 minutes of court time. Utilizing that depth, Humboldt State kept the defensive pressure on the Seawolves while spreading the wealth on offense.
Brian Morris topped the Jacks with 22 points and eight rebounds, also showcasing his passing ability with four assists. Kevin Atkins and Zac Tiedeman finished with 17 points each and Elliot Babcock-Krenk added 13 off the bench. Tiedeman, from nearby Santa Rosa, also had five assists without committing a turnover.
In their last three games the Lumberjacks have an average margin of victory of 40 points. The Jacks' 65-50 loss to SSU on Dec. 12 was freshest in their minds, however, providing ample motivation.
“I know we were embarrassed that we didn't play well in our own house,” HSU head coach Tom Wood said. “We were out-coached and out-hustled in the first game. We didn't want to repeat that performance.”
Sterling Arterberry led Sonoma State with 13 points, most coming on dribble-drives late in the game. Steven Pratt added 10 points for the Seawolves.
HSU's focus showed in its 62 percent shooting from the field. The Jacks hit from all over the floor, nailing 11-of-20 3-pointers, including an 8-of-12 performance in the second half.
The Lumberjacks also won the battle of the boards, pulling down 33 to SSU's 18.
Following a brief holiday break, the Jacks go back on the road for two more CCAA contests. They take on CSU Monterey Bay on Jan. 2 and travel to face San Francisco State on Jan. 3.
