ARCATA — Depth proved critical for Humboldt State in Thursday's California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball opener, helping the Lumberjacks earn a 77-60 win over Cal State Los Angeles.
Kevin Atkins scored 20 points and
Zac Tiedeman added 14 with a career-high eight rebounds for the Jacks, who improved to 2-2 overall. Also in double figures for HSU were
Kyle Baxter and
Elliot Babcock-Krenk, each with 10 points.
Chris Fields helped Cal State Los Angeles keep the game in doubt until midway through the second half, finishing with a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds. Dwayne Jones added 11 points and Carl Hoffman had eight for the Golden Eagles.
"We need to get everybody involved if we hope to be successful," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "If we're to play at a high-intensity, we need a lot of players, and we were able to play 13 tonight even though we have a couple banged up.
The Jacks went with a smaller lineup Friday with leading scorer and rebounder
Brian Morris out of action due to an injury. Missing due to illness was guard
Will Petty, but key contributions from the bench helped the Jacks maintain their pressing tactics the entire game.
HSU never trailed in the contest, moving out to a 10-3 lead when Tiedeman hit his first of three three-pointers with 15 minutes, 24 seconds left in the first half. Trevor Hopkins' three-pointer pulled CSULA within two points with 5:46 left in the period before the Jacks went on a 12-0 run that ended with
Keith Davis' layup.
The Eagles scored the final six points of the opening half, pulling within 10 at 32-23 when Jones drained a jumper at the buzzer.
Field's pair of free throws pulled the Eagles withing five points with 9:57 showing on the clock, but that's as close as they'd get the rest of the way. A three-pointer by Atkins increased the Jacks' cushion to 18 points wtih 4:23 left, and they led by at least 15 points the remainder of the contest.
Humboldt State is back in action Saturday, hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills in another CCAA game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.
