First half run propels Jacks to victory

ARCATA – A 21-point run in the first half propelled the Humboldt State women's basketball team to a 65-46 victory over the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros in Lumberjack Arena on Saturday Night.

The win improved the Jacks record to 4-1, 3-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.  CSUDH is now 1-5, 1-2 in the CCAA.

Box Score

Taylor Kilgore, who finished the night with 12 points, hit the first shot of the game, a 3-pointer, to give the Jacks a 3-0 lead and with 12 minutes, five seconds left in the half the Jacks led 16-10.

“It felt really good to get this win,” Kilgore said.  “We were feeling really good going in and after they way we played on Thursday night we came out and showed the fans what we could do.”

Over the next nine minutes HSU outscored the Toros 21-0 to push their advantage to 37-10.  In the run Bree Halsey scored eight points, Andrea Bobic had seven and Brittney Taylor added four.

By the end of the half the Jacks had a 39-15 lead.  They had shot 51 percent from the field (17-of-33), outscored CSUDH 24-to-4 in the paint and 15-to-3 off turnovers.

To open the second half, the two teams traded baskets.  With 12:21 left in the game, a Brittney Taylor layup gave the Jacks their largest lead of the night, 27 points, at 51-24.

But poor shooting allowed the Toros to battle back over the next 10 minutes.  After a made jumper by Cal State Dominguez Hills' Kayla Montalvo, the lead was down to 13 points.

“In the second half we had the right people taking the shots but they just weren't falling,” said head coach Joddie Gleason.  “Some nights they do and some night they don't, but it was nice to see us battle and continue to get stops at the defensive end”

Over the last 2:50, Kilgore and Taylor, who led the Lumberjacks with 20 points,  combined to score the Jacks final eight and secured the team's third conference win.

The 3-0 start in conference play ties this team with the 2005-06 Jacks for the best start in conference play during the coach Joddie Gleason era.

Three Lumberjacks, Halsey, Taylor and Kristen Huffman, led the team with eight rebounds each. Bobic added seven boards and eight points.

The Jacks return to action on Tuesday when they take on the Seawolves of Sonoma State at 5:30 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.  On Nov. 24 HSU defeated the Seawolves 76-47 in Rohnert Park.
