SAN BERNARDINO — After looking like a team possessed in building an early lead, Humboldt State survived a CSU San Bernardino comeback before running away and hiding again in claiming a 69-51 win over the Coyotes on
Friday.
Humboldt State stretched its winning streak to five straight games, improving to 18-6 overall and 13-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State San Bernardino dropped to 9-14 on the season and 7-10 in league.
Playing despite the lingering effects of the flu,
Paige Peterson spurred the Jacks on a second half surge that allowed them to survive their own inconsistency. HSU led by as many as 14 points in the first half, only to see the Coyotes storm back and take the lead before HSU finally put it away.
“At halftime we talked about how we weren't attacking the basket enough,” Humboldt State University's head women's basketball coach
Joddie Gleason said. “We came up a lot more aggressive in the second half and started setting people up for open shots.”
Trisha Alaba, who started in place of Peterson, was also key to the Jacks' success, finding open players at the right time. Benefiting from her five assists were
Brittney Taylor, who finished with 16 points, and
Andrea Bobic, who added 10 for HSU.
Katie Franci had nine points and six assists, and
Jennifer Enos added nine points for the Jacks.
Krystal Urzua scored 16 points to lead the Coyotes, while both Jaclyn Rainville and Artaisha Waters added eight points and eight rebounds.
Sharing the ball and the scoring burden was the Jacks' tactics early, an approach that allowed them to jump up 16-6 in the early minutes. Enos came off the bench to hit a pair of three-pointers, and two slick passes from Franci found Taylor and Bobic for layups.
Cal State San Bernardino kept in contact by virtue of its free throw opportunities, scoring 15 of its first 21 points from the line. They finally found the range from the three-point line, Urzua draining a long bomb and Emily Vore added another free throw to complete a run of 11 straight points that trimmed the Jacks' lead to 31-25 at halftime.
In the second half CSUSB completed its comeback when Vore drove for a layup, giving the Coyotes a 35-34 lead with 16:30 remaining to be played. Peterson drove and tied it with a jumper, then duplicated the feat to put Humboldt State back in front. She contributed again with her passing skills, three quick assists, helping Humboldt State maintain its surge and put the game away.
HSU's swing down south continues
Saturday when the Lumberjacks face Cal Poly Pomona at 5:30 p.m.
