ARCATA – Brian Morris scored a career-high 28 points, leading Humboldt State to a 72-60 win over Chico State in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball Thursday.

With the win, HSU improved to 9-5 overall and 6-3 in league, dealing Chico State its first loss on the road during the 2009-10 season. The Wildcats dropped to 9-3 overall and 5-2 in the CCAA.

"We talked all week about getting more post touches," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "Our practices weren't a lot of fun this week, but tonight's result is worth it."

Pounding the ball inside to Morris, a 6-9 junior, proved profitable from the start. His efforts, along with senior point guard Zac Tiedeman's early penetration, allowed the Jacks to forge a 30-22 lead by halftime.

Chico State pulled within five points early in the second half on a layup by Terrence Pellum. But the Jacks forged an 11-point lead on Morris' layup with 11 minutes, 37 seconds remaining, and the Jacks lead remained in double digits the rest of the way.

Kyle Baxter was the only other Lumberjack in double figures, finishing with 11 points. Morris also topped the team with 10 rebounds and Kevin Atkins added seven, while Elliot Babcock-Krenk dished six assists and Tiedeman finished with five.

Zach Graves and Roderick Hawkins scored 16 points each to pace the Wildcats, and Jon Baird finished with 13 points. Chico State got only six points from its bench, however, while the Jacks' second unit scored 23 points.

Humboldt State is back in action Saturday, taking on Cal State Stanislaus at 7:30 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.
