ARCATA — Tenacity on defense paid dividends on offense in Humboldt State's 68-49 win over Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday. The win kept the Jacks on pace in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, improving them to 7-3 in league and 10-5 overall.
Boxscore
The Lumberjacks held the Warriors to 20 first-half points to open a 39-20 lead, and never let the game get any closer than 17 points the rest of the way. Cal State Stanislaus dropped to 6-6 on the season and is 2-5 in CCAA contests.
"W're playing good defense right now, and teams have been having trouble scoring against us," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "We're also rewarding ourselves for that good defense by creating momentum for our offense."
Humboldt State never trailed, moving out to a 10-point on sophomore
Kyle Baxter's 3-pointer with 12 minutes, 34 seconds remaining in the first half. Cal State Stanislaus got the lead under double digits only once from that point, cutting it to 22-13 on Dwight Jones' jumper.
Baxter finished the half with another 3-pointer, on his way to 13 points. Senior center
Brian Morris paced the Jacks for the second straight night, scoring 22 points, while
Kevin Atkins added 10 and a team-high eight rebounds.
Zac Tiedeman efficiently ran the Jacks' offense, dishing seen assists while turning the ball over only once.
Jordan Stokes, Chad Johnson and Julian Williams each scored seven points for the Warriors. Stokes' six rebounds topped his team, but the Warriors were out-boarded, 33-24 by the Lumberjacks, including 11 offensive rebounds pulled down by HSU.
"We've been getting second chances ourselves while not giving up nearly as many," Wood said. "We worked on rebounding and all of the other toughness areas in practice this week."
Humboldt State remains home for two more CCAA contests this week, taking on UC San Diego on Thursday and Cal State East Bay on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tip-offs in Lumberjack Arena.
