Jacks continue homestand with two more games

ARCATA — For the second straight week the Lumberjacks host California Collegiate Athletic Association opponents, taking on UC San Diego on Thursday and Cal State East Bay on Saturday. After facing those two rivals, the Jacks will have seen ever CCAA opponent this season.

UC San Diego brings a 4-8 overall record and 3-6 league mark into the week's action. Cal State East Bay is 4-10 overall and 1-8 in the CCAA. The Lumberjacks, meanwhile, currently stand at 10-5 and 7-3.

On-the-Air

Every Lumberjack basketball game is broadcast live over the local airways on KATA, 1340 AM, beginning with the pregame show 15 minutes prior to game time.  Bicoastal Media Sports Director J.B. Mathers describes the action from Lumberjack Arena and HSU Assistant Athletic Director Dan Pambianco goes on the road with the Jacks. …Audio is also streamed live over the Internet through the hsujacks.com web site. The new UStream format allows an interactive chat between listeners during the webcast.  The specific URL for access is located at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/humboldt-state-athletics.

Head-to-Head
UC San Diego is now 7-2 all-time against the Lumberjacks winning two of the three games the teams played last year. After splitting the regular season series, the Jacks fell to the Tritons in the first round of the CCAA Tournament. …Humboldt State is 29-46 all-time against CSU East Bay, most encounters coming when both schools were members of the Northern California Athletic Conference and when the Pioneers were known as Cal State Hayward. The most recent meeting was a 87-62 Jacks' win during the 2003-04 season.

It worked. A rugged week of practices, focusing on "toughness" elements of the Lumberjacks' game, translated into a pair of league victories in Lumberjack Arena last week. The Jacks defeated rivals Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus, keeping themselves in the hunt for the CCAA title. They currently stand second in the 12-school conference, 1 1/2 games behind leader Cal State San Bernardino. …In its victories, the Lumberjacks won the battle of the boards by 12 rebounds the first night and nine the second. …Junior post Brian Morris put together two outstanding offensive efforts in the pair of wins, scoring 28 and 22 points, respectively. Morris also averaged eight rebounds per game and dished four assists to help the Jacks sweep. …The Lumberjacks still lead the CCAA in scoring margin, putting up 11.4 points more than their opponents on average. The are second in free throw percentage (.733) and third in field goal percentage (.460). The Jacks' 7.3 3-point field goals per game tops the CCAA. …Sophomore Will Petty continues to lead the league in 3-point percentage, hitting 15 of 28 for a .536 mark. Zac Tiedeman is first in assists/turnover ratio with a 3.0 standard, and third in assists with 4.1 per game. Morris ranks third in both scoring (15.4 points per game) and field goal percentage (.623). …Humboldt State head coach Tom Wood surpassed the 450-win milestone last week, and now has an overall record of 451-348 in his 29 years guiding the program. …The Lumberjacks are 6-1 at home this season, stretching their record in Arcata to 119-17 in the new millennium.

Opponents' Notes

UC San Diego is coming off a split of its CCAA games played last weekend in La Jolla. The Tritons lost to Cal State Monterey Bay, 66-62, before defeating San Francisco State, 91-86 in double overtime. …Senior guard Jordan Lawley is the Triton's and CCAA's leading scorer with an average of 18.8 points per game. He also leads the league in playing time, averaging 36.5 minutes played per game. …Ryan Casey is among the league's top rebounders, ranking fifth with 6.4 boards per game. …As a team, UCSD has held opponents' 3-point shooters to only 28 percent accuracy. …Cal State East Bay, the CCAA's newest member school, posted its first league win last week, defeating CSU Monterey Bay, 88-69 at home. The Pioneers more than doubled their scoring output from two days earlier, a game they lost, 61-43 to San Francisco State. …Freshman guard Mark Samuels is the Pioneers' leading scorer with an average of 7.8 points per game. Eight CSUEB players are averaging more than five points per game, but no single player is scoring in double figures. …Balance is also the key to CSUEB's rebounding efforts, with no player over four boards per game. However, as a team the Pioneers are nearly equal with opponents, trailing by an average of .5 rebounds per game. Junior forward Adam Green has posted a remarkable 3-point percentage this season, hitting 12 of 18 chances for .667 accuracy.
