ARCATA — Humboldt State brought Cal State East Bay's recent success to an abrupt halt Saturday with a 85-69 men's basketball victory in front of 1,648 fans in Lumberjack Arena.
Boxscore
The Jacks' victory, combined with Cal State San Bernardino's loss to San Francisco State, pulled the Jacks to within one-half game of the league-leading Coyotes in the California Collegiate Athletic Conference standings. HSU improved to 12-5 overall and 9-3 in the CCAA while Cal State East Bay dropped to 5-11 and 2-9 in conference.
Working the inside opened up the outside for Humboldt State, leading to 12 successful 3-pointers.
Brian Morris did the damage in the paint, scoring 16 points, while
Ernie Spada hit 5-of-9 from beyond the arc for 15 points.
Zac Tiedeman topped both of his teammates, finishing with a game-high 18 points, including 3-of-6 from long range and a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
"When we got more aggressive about going inside, it opened up the outside," Tiedeman said. "When we're patient and start throwing the ball in to Brian (Morris), it gets the offense going."
After a sluggish start that kept the Pioneers within striking distance early in the first half, the Lumberjacks increased their lead to 13 points when Spada nailed a 3-pointer as the period expired. The senior's shot put the Jacks ahead 38-25, and the Pioneers, winners of their last two games, were never able to get any closer.
"When the shots are falling, the game slows down," Spada said. "The basket seems bigger."
Humboldt State led by as many as 27 points in the second half. Only a late flurry by the Pioneers against the Jacks' bench made the score as close as it was.
Prince Ray Pope paced CSUEB with 14 points, including 3-of-4 shooting from 3-point range. Donavon Jackson had 10 points and Frankie McWirt scored eight for the Pioneers.
Humboldt State heads out on the road again this week, traveling to play Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday and Cal State Los Angeles on Saturday.
