Lumberjacks fall to No. 22 ranked CPP, 58-55

POMONA — Humboldt State squandered a 10-point halftime lead, falling to Cal Poly Pomona, 58-55 to drop the second game of its tough Southern California roadtrip Saturday.

Boxscore

The win improved the nation's No. 22-ranked Broncos to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Humboldt State fell to 8-5 and is now 5-3 in league.

Sophomore guard Will Petty nearly rescued the Jacks from the sweep, scoring the Lumberjacks' final eight points of the game to pull HSU within one point at 56-55 with 12 seconds remaining. But the Broncos converted a pair of free throws to seal the win.

Kevin Atkins led Humboldt State in scoring with 17 points. Petty, who replaced point guard Zac Tiedeman late in the game after Tiedeman suffered leg cramps, finished with 11 points for HSU.

Dwayne Fells led the Broncos in scoring with 13 points, while Tobias Jahn and Austin Swift each contributed 10. Cal Poly Pomona out-rebounded HSU, 28-24, including 11 offensive boards for second chances.

Cal Poly Pomona worked its way back into the game with a patient inside attack early in the second half, then used perimeter jumpers to forge a lead. Donelle Booker tied the game at 34-34 with just under 15 minutes to play, but Petty hit a free throw and crashed the boards for a putback to return the lead to HSU.

Mark Rutledge came off the bench and immediately hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give CPP a 43-39 lead with 9:40 to play.  Humboldt managed to pull within one point before the Broncos worked inside for field goals by Booker and Anderson to go up 44-42 with 6:19 to play.

The Lumberjacks return home this week to face Chico State on Thursday and Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday in Lumberjack Arena.
