CHICO — Following a slow start, Humboldt State picked up the pace, racing away from the Dominican University Penguins, 83-61 Friday in the opening game of the Mac Martin Tournament hosted by Chico State.
Boxscore
Randy Hunter scored a team-high 20 points, leading the Lumberjacks to their third straight win to open the season. But after a poor shooting first half against the 0-3 Dominican squad, the Jacks found their mark in a 12-0 second half surge to take control.
Midway through the second period, HSU clung to a 52-48 lead before Scott Clark scored on a driving layup to start the outburst. Only two minutes later, Hunter blocked a Penguins' shot and then converted a layup on the other end to move the Jacks ahead, 64-48 with 7 minutes, 53 seconds remaining.
That pretty much sealed the victory, with the Jacks' bench and all 11 available players chipping in to account for the final score.
Besides Hunter, who also led HSU in rebounding with nine,
Brian Morris was again dominant in the paint, scoring 18 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Also in double figures for the Jacks were Brandon Sperling with 15 points and Clark with 10.
Adam Chavis was the Penguins' top scorer with 14 points, and Mark Lewis added 10. Ian Collins topped his team with nine rebounds, but the Penguins also hurt themselves with 19 turnovers.
After shooting only 39 percent from the field in the opening half, the Lumberjacks improved to a 53 percent effort in the second period to finish at 45 percent overall. They also dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Penguins, 43-33.
HSU is back in action Saturday, taking on Northwest Christian at 5:30 p.m. in the third game of the Mac Martin Tournament.
