Final buzzer sinker lifts Jacks

Kayla Williams
ARCATA –  All hail Kayla Williams.  Humboldt fans jumped to their feet in a packed Lumberjack Arena on Saturday night in a game buzzing 3-pointer, forcing overtime against the Urban Knights.

With a second to play in regulation, a heavily-guarded Williams threw up a Hail-Mary, beyond the arc, in front of her home bench.

The result…a game-tying swish.

The Jacks out-scored Academy of Art in extra-play with a game ending victory, 76-73, in both teams first game of the CCAA/PacWest Challenge. The win ended the Jack's loosing steak of four games, putting them 2-4 overall.

“We needed this,” said Humboldt's Head Coach Joddie Gleason.  “This got the monkey off our back and we can go into tomorrows game with a win,” she added.

William's solid play all game helped lift the Jacks to the late-game minutes.  The junior guard added 16 points.

“We were hungry for it,” said Williams.  “I think it is a true testament of our team character to finish the game with a win,” she added.

The Jack's also saw consistent play from junior, Bree Halsey.  Halsey continues to score in the double-digits and added a season-high 22 points.

“I can't even explain how amazing it was,” commented Halsey on the overtime victory.  “There was no backing down.  We just had the mindset to win,” she added.

Academy of Art was led by Devin London with 17 points and saw another double-double from senior, Jessica Nolan.

The Jacks will match-up against Dominican University for their second and final game of the CCAA/PacWest Challenge at 3 p.m., Sunday.
