TURLOCK — Adversity struck early and often, and Humboldt State was unable to overcome in dropping a 73-58 decision to Cal State Stanislaus in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball contest Saturday.
Boxscore
The CSUS Warriors, now 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the CCAA, went to the free throw line 37 times, knocking down 29 to earn the victory. Big man Reggie Jones was the most prevalent beneficiary, hitting 11-of-14 free throws and roaming the paint freely after his HSU counterpart,
Brian Morris, was sent to the bench with two quick fouls less than three minutes into the game.
Jones finished with 26 points, teammate Brett Sayad had 14 and Dwight Jones added 11, including nine on free throws, to pace the Warriors. Humboldt State was led by Brandon Sperling's 18 points, and Randy Hunter added 10 for the Jacks, who lost for the first time this year and are now 5-1 overall and 1-1 in league.
An expected battle of two big men never materialized, as Morris was assessed his second foul with 17 minutes, 6 seconds remaining in the first half, forcing him to the bench for the rest of the first period. Jones had 14 points by halftime, helping the Warriors build a 34-24 lead.
Humboldt State kept the outcome in doubt, putting together several short runs in the second half, and pulling within six points on
Kyle Baxter's layup with 10:47 remaining. But the Warriors answered with Dwight Jones's drives and ensuing trips to the free throw line, also benefiting from four 3-pointers knocked down by Sayad.
The Lumberjacks head home for a single CCAA contest this week, hosting Sonoma State at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Lumberjack Arena.
