Strong finish earns Jacks' road win over SSU

ROHNERT PARK — Humboldt State held Sonoma State scoreless for the final 3 minutes, 45 seconds on the game, going on an 11-0 run to put away the Seawolves in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball action Sunday afternoon.

Brandon Sperling's layup started the final surge, helping the Jacks claim a 86-74 victory. Sperling scored six points in the run, finishing as one of six Lumberjack players scoring in double digits.

The victory improved Humboldt State's record to 6-1 in the CCAA and 9-1 overall. Sonoma State fell to 2-4 in league and 4-6 in all games.

Leading the Lumberjacks was Randy Hunter, who achieved his second double-double of the season by putting up 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Sperling had 17 points and Brian Morris had 14 points, all in the second half. Elliot Babcock-Krenk and Kyle Baxter each chipped in 11 points for HSU, and Ernie Spada added 10.

Sonoma State was led by Mike Nelson, who hit 4-of-5 3-pointers, most coming in an early shootout when he and Babcock-Krenk were matching long-range bombs. Matthew French and James Sandoval each had 10 points, Sandoval also topping his team in rebounding with six boards.

The game was tight throughout, neither team able to break away until HSU's late efforts. Sonoma State's largest lead came early in the first half when the Seawolves took a six-point advantage on Nelson's jumper with just over 14 minutes left until halftime.

Humboldt State battled back to take a five-point lead heading towards halftime, but Nelson trimmed it to two again with a 3-pointer. Sperling drained a pair of free throws to give HSU a 45-41 lead at the break.

Returning home for the first time since the holiday break, Humboldt State faces traditionally tough teams Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona. The Jacks and CSUSB Coyotes match up at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, and the CPP Broncos come to town for a 7:30 tip-off Saturday in Lumberjack Arena.
