Big win for Jacks sets up Saturday showdown

LOS ANGELES — As if he hasn't done enough in the past two weeks, Humboldt State's Brian Morris once again showcased his skills in lifting the Jacks to a 57-51 win over Cal State Los Angeles on Friday.

Boxscore

Morris, who has claimed back-to-back California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week awards, fought off an injury sustained earlier this week to post another double-double. Among his 20 points were strong moves to the basket in the game's waning minutes that produced back-to-back layups, extending the Jacks' lead to eight points with under a minute remaining.

The 6-9 post from Portland, Ore. also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds, earning his sixth double-double of the year.  He was supported by teammate Randy Hunter, who scored 14 points and was 2-for-2 from 3-point range, and Kyle Baxter, who added 12 points and three assists.

With the win, the Jacks improved to 14-1 overall and remain tied for the CCAA lead with a 10-1 record. The school HSU is tied with, Cal State Dominguez Hills, also won Friday, setting up a big matchup between the two teams in Carson on Saturday.

In Friday's game, HSU came from behind after trailing 29-28 at halftime. The Lumberjacks took the lead on Scott Clark's laup to start the second half, and never trailed again, though the contest remained tight.

David Norris scored 14 points to pace the league's second place Eagles, who fell to 11-4 overall and 7-4 in the CCAA. Carl Hoffman had 11 points and Chris Robinson added 10, along with a game-high 11 rebounds.

Saturday's HSU-CSUDH matchup is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off in Carson.
